SVENDBORG | 1010-0179-839 - At Kurz Wind, we support the longevity and performance of Svendborg hydraulic brake power units (HPUs) in utility-scale wind turbines. While most HPU systems are designed to last the full life of the turbine, field data from 2.X platform turbines with 127-meter rotors tells a different story. These specific turbine platforms are experiencing significantly higher HPU activation rates—exponentially more frequent braking events—due to main bearing float and nacelle oscillation. As a result, key drivetrain and yaw system components such as yaw drives, yaw pistons, and brake pucks are also impacted. We maintain inventory on all of these components to help minimize downtime. The aluminum manifold, standard on many Svendborg HPUs, was originally specified by the OEM due to its success on previous platforms. However, this aluminum block is now the most common failure point in 2.X–127m turbines under heavy cyclic loading. The solution? A steel manifold upgrade—a durable retrofit that strengthens the HPU where it’s most vulnerable. It's important to note that this is not a failure of the HPU design itself, but rather a symptom of turbine platform design changes. As wind turbine technology evolves, so must the hydraulic systems that support them. In response, Svendborg and other OEMs have introduced advanced HPU variations, including robust steel manifold models, tailored specifically for modern turbine loads and dynamics.
